I wrote and illustrated this little booklet, which was funded by two unions: UCU (Universities and Colleges Union) and Unison, which represents non-teaching staff.
Bullying is a terrible thing. It destroys lives and costs a fortune. When I was teaching at a university, I was bullied by a colleague. I learned that many other colleagues across the university also felt bullied, as did students.
I wonder how much of this behaviour could be prevented if we addressed situations early and had a greater and deeper understanding of neurodiversity and trauma. Could we match our understanding of why people bully with policies that manage these situations more effectively? Too often, the needs of bullying victims are placed behind the safeguarding of organisational reputations—and even the bullies themselves.
It was a huge success—so much so that it was reprinted over five times.
